Although self-esteem proves to be a tough obstacle to overcome, there has been a powerful force working to minimize the hardship. This powerful force has been Black Girls Rock, Inc. (in my opinion).
Earlier I was on Twitter looking it up and saw the hashtag #BlackGirlsRock attached to the feat of a Philadelphia senior who was admitted into all 8 Ivy League universities. While I was mostly elated and consumed with the news of such an accomplishment, I was intrigued by hashtag. The last time I saw it was the year before during awards season and all I thought at the time was “Oh, that’s nice.” This time, however, I felt the need to google ‘black girls rock’ to see what popped up. Lo and behold, I found out that it is an incorporation that has been dedicated to helping young Black girls build self-esteem since 2006.
I thought that this was perfect timing considering the string of blogs I’ve been posting. Here is an example and inspiration that has been working towards the ultimate goal within the community of Black women: a shared sense of self-love and sisterly praise or support.
I consider this to be the cornerstone of my posts because within the Black community, the strength comes from the woman more often than the man. This may hurt some feelings, but as known by virtually anyone, Black women are typically cast to the bottom of the totem pole because they are deemed unworthy yet are ironically trusted to be the bearer of all.
Therefore, the existence of this non-profit organization supports not only Black women, but ultimately the Black community. Soon enough, the value of self-love and support for one another will be taught by all grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends, and aunts to Black youth. Then, there will be no telling what our Black youth can accomplish when they are aware of their greatness and become each other’s keepers.
